Emergency Response Communication Standard
The Department of Transportation (DOT) Emergency Response Communication Standard
governs the shipping of chemicals deemed hazardous by the DOT and the labeling and
handling of a variety of materials. This standard has resulted in increased costs frommost
of our shippers for handling these materials. Some of our packaging amounts have been changed
to reflect the quantity limitations the DOT has placed on shipping certain chemicals. We will
continue to update our shipping policies to comply with changing regulations.
What does it mean?
Increased shipping costs on certain products.
How much will it cost?
Our shippers charge an additional $25–$35 to handle hazardous chemicals, depending
on the item and the shipping method. Please inquire when you order.
What restrictions apply?
Charges apply to each separate package or chemical a carrier handles, unless you purchase
multiples of the same product that can be shipped together. Some chemicals, however,
have very strict regulations on the quantity or volume that can be shipped, so we may not
be permitted to ship multiple items in one package.
What has Rio done to help?
We have attempted to minimize the effect of regulations on your business by labeling all our
products as clearly as possible. With changing regulations, however, we cannot guarantee the
accuracy of regulations described in this catalog. For complete information, please call us when you
are ready to order, and we will help you choose the safest, most economical way to ship your order.
What can you do to help?
Be sure to inquire about hazardous shipping charges, categories and other information when
you order.
MSDS are provided free of charge; always ask for an MSDS for each product you use or visit, keyword: MSDS
for downloadable versions. Keep these copies in your files.
For more MSDS information, please see page 783.
Lead/Arsenic Warning:
WARNING! Some soldering products, enamel powders, and base metal alloys contain lead
or lead/arsenic, chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or
other reproductive harm. If you intend to incorporate any base metal components purchased
from Rio Grande into jewelry for children age 12 and younger, please be aware that you are
responsible for testing those products to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state
and local laws including, but not limited to, the lead content requirements in CPSIA.
Lead and arsenic are both toxic. Prolonged or repeated exposure above Occupational
Exposure Limits may cause lung damage and accumulation of lead in the body. In serious cases
this may cause anemia, kidney and central nervous system damage, and can impair reproductive
fertility. Lead in the blood of pregnant women may affect the development
of the unborn child. Do not use on jewelry or products intended for children. Persons
exposed to lead compounds should have regular checks, which should include blood
monitoring. Arsenic compounds can have cumulative effects. Wear a NIOSH-approved
respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop.
Before using these products, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting
the National Lead Information Hotline at 800.424.LEAD (5323) or log on to
for information on arsenic.
Please Note:
All items in this catalog that contain even trace amounts of lead are marked
with a “ ” symbol and are not suitable for children’s jewelry.
